What is QRP operation?

QRP operation refers to the practice of using low power output when transmitting in amateur radio communication. The term “QRP” comes from the Q-code used in Morse code communication, where “QRP” means “reduce power.” In the context of amateur radio, QRP operation typically involves transmitting with an output power of 5 watts or less for CW (Continuous Wave) and digital modes, and 10 watts or less for SSB (Single Sideband) voice mode.

QRP operation is popular among amateur radio enthusiasts for various reasons, such as:

  • Challenge: Operating with low power requires skill in optimizing antenna systems, propagation, and operating techniques to establish and maintain successful communication. Many amateur radio operators enjoy the challenge of making contacts with minimal power output.
  • Portability: QRP transceivers and associated equipment are often smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient than high-power setups, making them ideal for portable and mobile operations, such as hiking, camping, or operating from remote locations.
  • Cost: Lower power equipment typically costs less than high-power counterparts, making QRP operation more accessible to newcomers or those with budget constraints.
